A Week That's Worth Two Blog Posts!

It's only Wednesday and I already have so much that I could share about our week. Now that we are into our routines, there is SO much learning and growing happening in our classroom and school!

Today our students at Lemons Mill had the privilege (this is our Word of the Week!) of meeting famous children's author, Patricia Polacco. The teachers were pretty excited too! :) We spent an hour listening to her tell her stories and share about overcoming her obstacles as a student.

Waiting for her to begin, these three were very excited! :)

This was during her retelling of her book Meteor! She had some pretty neat sound effects as she told the story of the meteor landing on her grandparent's farm in Union City, Michigan.

We also heard the story of The Keeping Quilt. It's made from pieces of clothing from her family. From one generation to the next, the quilt was used as a Sabbath tablecloth, a wedding canopy, and a blanket to welcome each new child into the world.
We got to see the quilt in person! The original is now is a museum, but this one is an exact replica!

She explained what a few of the pieces on the quilt were from.

As the students left the gym, they got to touch a piece of the meteor from Patricia's grandparents farm. As they touched, they were encouraged to make a wish! They could wish for all BUT three things: money, to change people, or toys.

At the end of the day, one third grade student from each class was able to interview Patricia Polacco. The interview was recorded and will be shared with students for the years to come!

In third grade, we do an author study on Patricia Polacco in the spring. However since we had her visit, we got a sneak peak at a couple of her books this week! We read both The Junkyard Wonders and Chicken Sunday. We used Chicken Sunday to practice our reading target for the week: I can identify the plot of a story.

This day was just too special not to share! I will post about the rest of our week as it concludes!
